What do colleges look for in an application essay? What is a good topic? A bad topic? How can students write essays that are unique and memorable?
High school students and their families will learn the answers to these questions and more when essay writing expert Sharon Epstein and Ken Higgins, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Sacred Heart University, present “The ABC's of Writing a Great College Application Essay.”
Sharon Epstein is a two-time Emmy® nominee and recipient of a Writers Guild Award for her work on All My Children. After a twenty year career in television she founded First Impressions College Consulting, where she specializes in teaching students how to master interviews and transform their ideas, goals, and experiences into successful college application essays. Her blog, ApplyingToCollege.org, provides easy-to-follow advice on writing college essays, mastering interview skills, and navigating the college process.
Ken Higgins, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Sacred Heart University, holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Delaware. From eight hundred to one thousand essays cross his desk each year. During his time at Sacred Heart, Ken has read thousands of college application essays.
During the program, Ms. Epstein will give an overview of the college essay writing process, discuss the 2014 Common Application essay prompts, and focus on how to make every essay interesting and unique. Mr. Higgins will share a first hand account of the role of the admission officer, give examples of essays that have and haven't worked, and talk about how essays are viewed in the context of the entire application.
