May Events at The Brookfield Library

Tricordes in Concert on May 4
TricordesTricordes, a trio composed of Andrew Smith, violin; Andrea Mills, cello; and Daniel Corr, classical guitar, will perform at The Brookfield Library on Sunday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m.

The program will include pieces by Franz Joseph Haydn, Bryan Johanson, Ester Magi, and Francois de Fossa.  Free refreshments will follow the performance.

New Foreign/Independent Film Series

The Brookfield Library's new Foreign/Independent Film Series will continue on May 18 with a showing of He Died With a Felafel in His Hand.  The screening will begin at 3:00 p.m., and admission is free.  We will provide free popcorn and soda -- feel free to bring other (non-alcoholic) refreshments with you.

FelafelThe film is a darkly humorous search for love, meaning, and bathroom solitude.  Faithful to the cult novel by John Birmingham on which it was based, the film follows Danny (Noah Taylor) through a series of shared housing experiences in a succession of cities on the east coast of Australia.  Together these vignettes form a forceful, sometimes turbulent, narrative that leaves the viewer entertained, exhausted, and surprisingly reflective.  This film is not rated.

New Flagpole at the Library
Thanks to the efforts of Frank Johnson and the Brookfield American flagVeterans of Foreign Wars, the library now has a flagpole in the south garden.
Vote!

The Town of Brookfield budget referendum will be held later this month.  We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to vote.

If you are not currently registered to vote in Brookfield, both the library and Town Hall have voter registration forms.

Book Discussions

Book 'Em!  Mystery Discussion

Ritual BathThe next meeting of The Brookfield Library's mystery discussion club, Book 'Em!, will feature The Ritual Bath by Faye Kellerman. The quiet, ordered world of a yeshiva in the California hills is shattered when a woman is brutally raped as she returns from the mikvah, the bathhouse where women perform their cleansing ritual. Detective Peter Decker of the LAPD has never heard anything like it. And although most of the community refuses to talk to him, Rina Lazarus, the only witness, does, steering him through the maze of confusing religious laws that thwart his investigation at every turn. As the trail grows cold, Decker's only getting closer to Rina and not to the rapist--or is he? Maybe Rina was the intended victim all along. And the rapist may not stop with rape the next time...

Please join us for this discussion on Monday, May 19 at 12:30 p.m. in the Brookfield Library Community Room.  Copies of the book are available at the library's Checkout Desk. Please register for this program at the library, or online.

Fiction Book Discussion

Knitting CircleThe library's book group will disuss The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood on Thursday,  May 29, at 12:30 and 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room.

Since the sudden loss of her only child, Mary Baxter has been unable to read or write, unable to pursue the activities that used to be her primary source of comfort. At her mother's suggestion, she takes up knitting as a way to fill the empty hours and lonely days. And she reluctantly joins a knitting circle in her hometown of Providence, Rhode Island - not knowing that it will change her life.  Alice, Scarlet, Lulu, Beth, Harriet, and Ellen welcome Mary into their circle despite her hesitance to open her heart to them. Each woman teaches Mary a new knitting technique, and, as they do, they reveal to her their own secrets of loss, love, and hope. Eventually, through the hours they spend knitting and talking together, Mary is finally able to tell her own story of grief, and in so doing finds the spark of life again.

Copies of The Knitting Circle are available at the library's Checkout Desk.  Please register at the library or online.
